Feb 29 (Wed) “ Hormones and Genetics in the Skeleton" with Edward Hsiao M.D. Ph.D. of UCSF The Spring 2012 Marin Science Seminar calendar is now online. Download the flyer here: RESILIENT NEIGHBORHOODS is already making a difference in Marin! We've eliminated over 275,000 pounds of carbon pollution! We're over halfway toward our pilot project goal of helping 100 households reduce their collective carbon emissions by 500,000 pounds while making their families and neighborhoods safer. People are meeting their neighbors, making new friends and learning new things as they go though the program together. HOW? Households form EcoTeams (of 5-8 families), go on a "low carbon diet" and take actions to reduce carbon emissions, prepare for emergencies and revitalize the local economy. Actions that can save you money and also "just so happen" to address environmental problems. WHAT'S THE NEXT STEP? We are recruiting about a dozen more EcoTeams for the Pilot Program. The pilot period gives teams time to start in January and finish their 5 meetings by March. Teams can make the changes in their homes while helping our cities and towns meet their Climate Action Plan goals. Resilient Neighborhoods gives families the tools and support they need to make measurable improvements in the way they live. It's free, it's fun, it can save you money on your utility bills and even help you earn up to thousands of dollars in rebates and incentives from Energy Upgrade California. AND THE CATCH? There is no catch! We just want to complete this pilot in the first quarter of 2012 so we can revise materials and get funding to roll out across Marin in 2012. We know you want your ecological footprint to be as light as possible, and Resilient Neighborhoods is the short path to get there. Find out how much community you can gain -- and how painlessly you can lose pounds. Email us for more info or go to our website see below. |
People keep telling us our program is GREAT, maybe you are one of them who has completed a team and wants to help set up another one! NOW IS THE TIME to follow up with friends and neighbors. Everything is set so new EcoTeams can begin in early January. Warm wishes for happiness and lighter living in the New Year! Film - "Tierras Libres" Documentary Friday, February 24 at 7:30 PM Tierras Libres, a film by Edward Ellis, is about the struggle for land reform in Venezuela. The agrarian reform law, passed in 2001, was designed to alleviate rural poverty, stimulate domestic agricultural production, and break up the system of large estates that exists in the countryside. The law has aroused the wrath of conservative elites--a radical sector of the Anti-Chavez opposition. Special guest Martin Sanchez, former Consul General of Venezuela, will lead a discussion following the film and give an update on the current status of the law's implementation and its impact on the peasant population. This event is sponsored by the Task Force on the Americas. A $5-10 donation is suggested. No one turned away for lack of funds. The venue is wheelchair accessible. For information call 415/924-3227 or visitwww.mitfamericas.org. It will be screened at the, First United Methodist Church, 9 Ross Valley Drive (at Fourth Street), San Rafael.

SMARTMETERS UPDATE CPUC's disappointing (but not surprising) action on Wednesday has been well-covered by local media: IJ front page: http://www.marinij.com/ci_19871058?IADID=Search-www.marinij.com-www.marinij.com Channel 5: http://sanfrancisco.cbslocal.com/2012/02/01/puc-approves-pge-smart-meter-opt-out-charge/ Channel 2: http://www.ktvu.com/videos/news/san-francisco-critics-decry-cpucs-approval-of/vFxZy/ Ironically, on the same day, UK officials decided to make SmartMeters voluntary, apparently more influenced by public outcry in the U.S. than are regulators in the U.S.! http://tgr.ph/yGiy1V Impassioned public comment at Wednesday's meeting filled nearly two hours, after which it was clear from commissioners' prepared statements and from PG&E's immediate robo-calls and opt-out procedures on the PG&E website, that this decision had been made well in advance --perhaps weeks/months. The decision includes a "second phase" in which "community-wide opt-out" and "cost evaluation" are to be addressed, but what this actually means remains to be seen. What is a "community," for example? Whatever ensues, we can be assured that the results will benefit the utility at the expense of the ratepayers. PG&E stands to make at least $17 million (just in the first year) from these let-us-pay-you-not-to-break-our-kneecaps fees. EMF Safety Network founder-director Sandi Mauer puts it this way: Everyone has paid for Smart Meters through rate hikes on our utility bills. So, if you still have the analog, not only do you not get a refund for the Smart Meter you will not use, but you have to pay to keep the analog meter you already have. Michael Peevey, who wrote the proposal justified the fees, calling it a "service". What about the people who asked, or had signs posted stating to not have a Smart Meter, but were forced to have them? What about banks of meters, neighbors meters, the saturation of our communities with pulsed radiation, no investigation on public health and environmental impacts, no investigation on smart meter fires or meters exploding.not even a cost evaluation of the fees?!? The fees are arbitrary, punitive, unfair and amount to extortion. The fees also discriminate against people for medical reasons and are therefore illegal. Customers have until May to give PG&E an opt-out decision, so I believe it is wise NOT to do anything immediately unless you are suffering adverse health symptoms. We need to see what unfolds in upcoming weeks. Regrettably, we cannot trust PG&E in any aspect of this matter. For example, I learned earlier today that a customer who immediately opted-out has had a meter with a digital face installed, but was told by the installer that it was "analog inside." Well . . . not likely! We know that digital meters have a switching mode power supply (SMPS) just as SmartMeters do, and that an SMPS can put transients or "dirty electricity" on home wiring, creating electromagnetic fields within rooms. We know true electromechanical/analog meters are available, so this installation case and others must be investigated. Again, thank you for all you have done to date, and if you need a quick way to vent, call or write Governor Brown (http://gov.ca.gov/m_contact.php) and ask for Michael Peevey's removal --unless of course you're pleased that he appointed himself to the case re fining/not fining PG&E for San Bruno. S.F. Chronicle editorial: http://www.sfgate.com/cgi-bin/article.cgi?f=/c/a/2012/01/28/EDQ61MVJPI.DTL Article: http://www.sfgate.com/cgi-bin/article.cgi?f=/c/a/2012/02/02/BAUU1N1KQV.DTL A recent communique to the CPUC from the American Academy of Environmental Medicine calling chronic wireless radiation exposure a preventable environmental hazard that warrants immediate public health action. The Academy urges the Commission to halt SmartMeter installation and to modify the revised proposed decision. Vicki Sievers
