The Pubic Works Department of the County of Marin is spreading the word about a new and free Household Hazardous Waste Recycling Program for residents called "Bulb and Battery Take-Back Program", or simply 'The BnB'.
The goal is to simply reduce and eliminate the amount of illegally disposed of hazardous waste from household products like florescent bulbs, tubes and batteries. To facilitate this; 10 local businesses have volunteered to serve as convenient collection points for residents to drop off their spent tubes, bulbs and batteries. Take the spent items with you while you're shopping and deposit them at the collection location's BnB bin for free. That's it! The Civic Center Library is collecting household batteries as well. For information on Take Back Collection Locations (click <http://www.marinrecycles.org/BnB/bnb_ctrs.cfm> )

WB 580 to NB 101 Connector, Bellam Blvd., and East Francisco Blvd. Improvements Construction on the 580/101 Connector Project is scheduled to begin on April 5, 2010. Originally scheduled for December 2009, work was postponed by three months in order to minimize impacts to the traveling public during the rainy season. By rescheduling the start of major construction operations for April, significant rain and wet grade delays to construction activities can be kept to a minimum. The 580/101 Connector Project will rebuild the connector from westbound (WB) 580 to northbound (NB) 101, including replacement of the bridge on WB 580 over Bellam Blvd., an auxiliary lane for the WB 580 Offramp to Bellam Blvd., and improvements to the pedestrian facilities along Bellam and Francisco Boulevards in San Rafael. In order to replace the WB 580 bridge over Bellam Blvd, traffic will need to be rerouted onto the EB 580 bridge over Bellam Blvd. To accomplish this, the SB 101 to EB 580 and WB 580 to NB 101 Connectors will be temporarily reduced to one-lane in each direction. Up to one traffic lane in each direction on Bellam Blvd. will also be closed during certain times during this project. Transit service between Andersen Drive and the Canal community will be impacted. Delays to the traveling public are expected and drivers should adjust their commute times accordingly. The detour is expected to be in place for approximately seven months from mid-April through October, 2010. For more information on this project, please visit www.tam.ca.gov.
With the continued explosion of technology, the San Rafael Police Department (SRPD) now has a blog that is available for anyone to view. This is a great opportunity for the Department to provide information, safety tips, stories, etc. about SRPD. It is similar to Twitter but provides the Department a more personal approach. Feel free to visit and give the SRPD any feedback. Click on logo for shopping info in San Rafael.

| | When: | Wednesday, September 29, 7:00PM to 9:00PM | | Phone: | 415-987-8636 | You're invited to attend this one-time showing of Brian Shul's extraordinary presentation about his experience as a pilot for America's fastest airplane. This is an unforgettable, inspiring multi-media "movie" about the famous spy plane, the SR-71 "Blackbird," and its most famous pilot, Brian Shul. You don't even have to be interested in aeronautics or military things to be moved, inspired, and awed by this presentation. It's a tale of a miraculous come-back after a near death experience, a little known piece of 20th century history, and a visual feast of extraordinary photos. Brian narrates in person - his tale is fascinating! It was a huge hit here 2 years ago and should not be missed this time. Great for young people, too!

Ready, Set, Go! was released today as part of a nation-wide effort to better educate, prepare and help Marin residents and Marin Firefighters from the real threat of wildfire. The program was modeled after a Wildfire Action Plan that was originally developed in Australia and was initially adapted for use in Southern California. Some good work was accomplished by a number of Marin officials to adapt the material for local use, including San Rafael's Steven Hancock and Angela Del Ponte. Our best efforts are completed before a fire occurs and residents can play an important role in the safety of their home and community. Ready, Set, Go! information (Video, action plan and residential survey) is available on our website at www.srfd.org or http://www.readysetgomarin.org. Brochures are being distributed to all fire stations and more are available. Please become familiar with the information and use it readily as you visit neighborhoods and residents in your district. Homeowners are encouraged to contact their local Marin fire station for further information and assistance.

Community Gardeners Unite! received a phone call from Linda Shephard, with Marin County Office of Education. They have a site that could potentially be a community garden. Unfortunately, it's not a project the school district can undertake at this time but would be interested in working with a group to develop the site into a garden. If this is something you are interested in pursuing or sharing with Supervisor Adams, please give Linda a call. Linda Shephard 491-6644

Are You O.K.? Program - This program is a free service for seniors and house bound residents of Marin. It is designed to ease the concern of relatives and friends who may find it difficult to maintain consistent and reliable contact with the participant. It works like this - each day, beginning at 10:00 a.m., the "Are You O.K.?" system will call the participant. When the telephone is answered, a predetermined message will let you know this is your "Are You O.K.? call. If there is no answer, the system will call back ten minutes later. If after the second call there is still no answer, "Are You O.K.?" volunteers are alerted to telephone the designated emergency contact to determine if there is a problem. To become a participant, call the San Rafael Police Department, (415) 485-3030 and leave your name and telephone number. The "Are You O.K.? volunteer coordinator will answer your questions and arrange for an interview with a site visit to begin the service. Priority is given to Seniors, people who are experiencing health problems and those who are alone in Marin County.
Car Alarm Tip Put your car keys beside your bed at night. If you hear a noise outside your home or someone trying to get in your house, just press the panic button for your car. The alarm will be set off, and the horn will continue to sound until either you turn it off or the car battery dies. It's a security alarm system that you probably already have and requires no installation. Test it. It will go off from most everywhere inside your house and will keep honking until your battery runs down or until you reset it with the button on the key fob chain. It works if you park in your driveway or garage. If your car alarm goes off when someone is trying to break into your house, odds are the burglar rapist won't stick around... After a few seconds all the neighbors will be looking out their windows to see who is out there and sure enough the criminal won't want that. And remember to carry your keys while walking to your car in a parking lot. The alarm can work the same way there.

The San Rafael Police Department (SRPD) is offering a new online service that makes police activity, crime, and statistical information easily available residents. SRPD has partnered with CrimeReports.com, a Utah-based web company that provides online mapping and analysis. The service is free to the general public, and by logging onto www.crimereports.com, residents can easily view maps and charts that show locations of recent police activity. The information is presented on Google maps and includes the dates, times, and descriptions of the reported incidents, along with block numbers. The incidents shown are based on calls for service handled by the Police Department and don’t necessarily result in a crime report or an arrest. Some incidents, such as vacation home checks, will not be displayed. In most instances the information will be available between 24 and 48 hours after occurrence. The program also allows residents to sign up for free-email crime alerts that can be customized. Users can choose to receive alerts for activity occurring in certain neighborhoods, for example, or within a certain distance from an address. More information about CrimeReports and a link can be found on the SRPD website, click on the shield. . A link is also available on the City’s website, click the bell below.
The Police have provided the following hints for personal safety when hiking or walking in any open space area: When possible, don't walk alone, try to take a friend. You should be aware of your surroundings at all times. Avoid areas with heavy brush. Try to keep some sort of communication device with you, such as a cell phone. Tell someone where and when you are leaving, your expected trail and when you expect to return. Fire roads, service roads and trails are not marked or named, and you should be prepared to explain how someone would get to you. Never enter Parks or Open Space at night. When the sun sets you should be well on your way out. Do not confront anyone. If someone should confront you, immediately report it to the Police Department.
